Response Art

A part of my personal and professional art-making practice involves visually responding to the work I do with clients. This takes the form of response art, which is a lot like it sounds. I constantly view and/or think in images, so it makes sense I would create images to help me process my interactions, with both people and environments. The above drawing is a compilation of sketches about interactions I had with several of my clients. By visually depicting these interactions, I was better able to draw conclusions and make connections, which informed our work together moving forward by helping me process what came up in the session and how to best guide the client in subsequent sessions.

Response art can also be a response to the connections we make with people we meet in our environments. This process demonstrates the significance art-making has in my life. I work with people with all kinds of relationships with art and art-making. A response I have heard dozens of times is 'I am not an artist.' That is perfectly fine! Part of my job is working with my clients to find a form of creative expression that interests them and gives them a sense of excitement.
